Scott Shean: Scott and Valerie Shean live at 12223 Lake Leta Circle, and have been
residents of Lake Sherwood since 1974. Their two children Tracy and Mark, who were
infants at the time, grew up in Lake Sherwood. Tracy is married to Charles Jantzi
and has provided them with three grandchildren. Mark is not married and has recently
relocated to Houston where he works for a computer software company.
Scott earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from LSU in 1964 and a year later joined
the Engineering Department of Freeport Sulphur Company. During his career, Freeport
vertically expanded into phosphate fertilizer and later merged with McMoRan Oil and
Gas to become Freeport-McMoRan.
Scott’s assignments were primarily in the fertilizer segment, where he served in
various engineering, operating, and management positions. In later years, he had
responsibility for the company’s Louisiana Chemical operations, which included community
relations, personnel, administration, environmental, engineering, and plant operations
for their three chemical fertilizer facilities in St. James and St. John Parishes.
During this time he represented Freeport and Agrico on the boards of the Community
Fund for the Arts and the Louisiana Chemical Association.
Scott and Valerie spent the last two years of his Freeport career in Madrid, Spain,
before returning home and retiring in 1995.
The Shean hobbies include their grandchildren, and traveling. They have returned
to Europe several times since living there. Their favorite destinations are Spain
and Greece. One of Scott’s hobbies is the restoration and ongoing care of their
1978 classic GMC motorhome.
Scott joined the SLA board in 2006. He served as Secretary for three years and as
President in 2009 and 2010. Current committee assignments include Finance, Club

Mike Hayes has been a resident of Lake Sherwood for the last six years. He lives
with Jami, his wife and two of his stepsons at 4118 Lake Sherwood East. Jami and
Mike have 6 kids and 3 grandchildren collectively. He lived previously on Lake LaDare
during the time of 1979 to 1983.
Mike retired in July 2007 from a career with Blue Cross Shield of Louisiana. During
his 34 years his primary work was in the Internal Operations. He served as part of
the Executive Management Team and was the Executive Director of HMOLA. He ended his
career serving as the Senior Vice President of Benefits Administration. After his
retirement with BCBSLA, he did commute for 2 years to Puerto Rico. During this time,
he was the Chief Operating Officer of Medical Card Services. MCS is a health insurer
about the size of BCBSLA. In May of 2009, Mike came home.
The Board of Lake Sherwood gives Mike a focus for his retirement period and allows
him to utilize his experience and training working with a management group. Prior
to this year, Mike was a member of the Lake Sherwood Board in 2007. Because of the
Puerto Rico job travel he did not seek reelection in 2008. Mike has lived both on
and off the lake; as a result he brings a broader perspective of our resident’s needs.
Mike spends much of his time in the neighborhood. You may see him on his daily walk
around the lake with Woofy and LolliPup, the two PeekaPoos that are his constant
companions. If you get a chance stop and chat, he would like to spend time getting
to know you and listen to your perspectives.
